Russia's Royal Renaissance: Grand Duke Cyril's Civil Wedding in Moscow

On September 14, 1926, a significant event took place in Moscow, marking a turning point in the lives of two prominent figures of the Russian royal family. The civil wedding of Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich and Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh, a union that had been years in the making, was finally solemnized in a quiet ceremony at the Moscow City Hall. This momentous occasion was not only a testament to the enduring love between the couple but also a reflection of the tumultuous times in which they lived, as the Russian Revolution had left the royal family's future uncertain. As the couple exchanged their vows, the world watched with bated breath, knowing that this union would have far-reaching implications for the Russian monarchy. The marriage of Grand Duke Cyril and Princess Victoria was a beacon of hope for those who still held on to the ideals of the monarchy, and it served as a reminder of the resilience and determination of those who had been touched by the grandeur of the Romanov dynasty.

Today at 2:00pm, Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia and Princess Victoria Romanovna Romanoff (née Rebecca Virginia Bettarini) were civilly married at the Khamovniki Town Hall in Moscow. The grand duke is the only child of Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia and Prince Franz Wilhelm of Prussia. The princess is the only child of Ambassador Roberto Bettarini and Carla Virginia Cacciatore.

For the civil wedding, the dress worn by Princess Victoria Romanovna Romanoff was made by the designer Chiara Boni in an ice-blue color, embroidered with gold thread inspired by the traditional folkloric designs of Khokhloma. Ice-blue is also the color of the Imperial Order of Saint Andrew the First Called, which is the most important dynastic order of the Russian Imperial House. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1698. The light blue ribbon of the Order of Saint Andrew served as an inspiration for the shade of the dress of the civil marriage.
